Trapped in Freedom

[EN] In may 2013, I recorded sax and percussion for Fusion-Metal band from Lille, France : Trapped in Freedom. Their drummer is none other than Tom aka Jimy Wong from Cool Cavemen, the band I played with for more than eight years ! Their progressive style borrows from everything from Bossa-Nova and Salsa to Free Jazz ! This challenging experience made me develop some new musical vocabulary. No wonder they needed some extra musicians to develop their sound…😉

Here is one song on which I played  :

You can hear me improvising in a Free Jazz style (in the background) at 0’49 on a weird, disturbing riff. I used diminished scale and all I could think of in terms of noise music : microtonal variations on the same note, roaring, indefinite altissimo notes with a rapid descent to the lowest possible… At 2’14, there is the same disturbing atmosphere but at the same time with a suprising Bossa Nova vibe to it. I was inspired by Stan Getz but keeping to the lead sheet it ended up very different to “The Girl from Ipanema” ! I also played a lot of additional percussion on this track (timbales, bongos, congas) to help getting that latin feel.

On this same album, I also arranged for a horn section -> see the Arrangements section of the site.

P.S. I will not translate the spoken word parts because their are lines from French porn movies…  :-p
