[EN] Hi! This week, I am publishing a transcription of bassist Ben Kenney‘s work on a song by Incubus called “Pantomime”. Ben Kenney is not part of the original Incubus line-up, and I know a lot of people regret former bass player Dirk Lance’s work. As for me, as much as I loved Dirk’s funky slap or finger style, I also like Ben’s melodic phrases and changing of root notes to rearrange of certain songs. Different bassists, different styles, period. Each one has his own richness and originality. As for the band’s music, that is different story…

Back to “Pantomime”. This song was first played as a live-only performance (see the “Alive at Red Rocks” DVD), then recorded onto the “Monuments & Melodies” album. It is a powerful rock song in 3/4, with a long introduction, gradually leading to a guitar solo/climax, and ending with a slow, atmospheric outro. Though the main parts are plain, chord-root 8ths, listen to how Ben Kenney alternatively follows the drums (on the 2nd chorus), the guitar (on the solo). To me, this shows how much work is put in Incubus’ arrangements, whether you like their songs or not. Also, keep an ear out for the Bb and Fm7 chords on the outro. I guess playing chords is due to Ben Kenney’s guitar-playing past (he played in Hip-hop band the Roots).

[FR] Salut ! Cette semaine, je publie un relevé du travail du bassiste Ben Kenney sur une chanson d’Incubus qui s’appelle “Pantomime”. Ben Kenney ne fait pas partie des membres fondateurs du groupe, et je sais que beaucoup de gens regrettent le travail de l’ancien bassiste Dirk Lance. Pour ma part, autant j’aimais le style funky en slap ou au doigt de Dirk, autant j’aime les phrases mélodiques et le changement de fondamentales pour réarranger certaines chansons de Ben. Bassistes différents, styles différents, point à la ligne. Pour ce qui est de la musique du groupe, c’est une autre histoire…

Revenons à “Pantomime”. Cette chanson a été jouée d’abord en tant que morceau de concert (cf le DVD “Alive at Red Rocks”), puis enregistrée sur l’album “Monuments & Melodies”. C’est une chanson rock, puissante, en 3/4, avec une longue introduction, menant progressivement à un climax/solo de guitare, et se terminant avec une outro lente et atmosphérique. Bien que les parties principales soient de simples croches suivant les fondamentales, écoutez comment Ben Kenney suit alternativement la batterie (2e refrain), la guitare (sur le solo). Pour moi, ceci montre combien de travail est mis dans les arrangements d’Incubus, qu’on aime leurs chansons ou pas. Gardez également une oreille attentive pour les accords de Sib et Fam7 sur l’outro. Je suppose que le fait de jouer des accords est dû au passé de guitariste de Ben Kenney (il a joué dans le groupe de Hip-hop the Roots).
